Heavy goods are a new type of parcel and other trends from HDW19

Gary’s insights. At the event, Gary González discussed the following types of challenges that Innovecs can address:

• Pallet loading automation. This also includes topics such as multi-pallets loading and palletizing of non-homogeneous items.
• Warehousing automation. Image recognition can deal with outliers detected during warehouse loading, such as catching missing barcodes, automating alerts, and much more.
• Monitor and manage inventory and delivery in real-time, with complex software that is able to see to the needs of retailers, carriers, and end customers. For instance, consumers may want to change the delivery location and time during any delivery stage. Carriers, in turn, need to improve the efficiency of their drivers to reduce costs.
• Integration of the various services and parties into one ecosystem. Since there are usually many parties engaged in the delivery process, with different hands-on solutions, software development companies can help with their transformation and integration.
• Revamping outdated systems. When companies increase in their size, would like to integrate new technologies or update their solutions, third-party developers like Innovecs can help with the overhaul.

Trends learned from the event. Since 2013, when the event first happened, the number of visitors, as well as the event format, have both grown. This year, 2,785 attendees visited the event, and the narrative has evolved from last-mile delivery and e-commerce to the goods segment. For instance, parcel, heavy goods, and grocery have been allocated in separate streams.

Why is this getting so much attention? Heavy goods are a new type of parcel. The youth of today expects to receive heavy goods as quickly as small goods. Attempts to meet these demands lead to an enormous increase in logistics costs. Another challenge discussed at the conference is the shipping of non-durables. Manufacturers are unlikely to transport such goods across the country and choose short-hauls from the department store to the nearby residence instead. This may cause a discrepancy between capacities and demand.
